At the conclusion of the third day of the fifth Ashes Test between England and Australia at The Oval, the 37-year-old player, who recently reached the milestone of 600 Test wickets, announced this information.

Broad has been an important member of the England Test team since his debut against Sri Lanka in December 2007, amassing 167 caps and taking the most wickets in this summer’s Ashes series.

The decision to announce his retirement had been on Broad’s mind for a few weeks, but he didn’t actually tell England captain Ben Stokes about it until 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the team hotel.

While Broad still feels physically fit, he thought that ending this Ashes series was the ideal time to call it quits on an outstanding career. The rest of the team was informed in morning in the change room.
